Future of the Forum

Postby tarboat » Mon Aug 19, 2019 11:35 am

The past couple of weeks have been taken up in cleaning up after the recent spam bot attacks on the forum and preventing further intrusion. At one point there were over a thousand false accounts awaiting verification!I think that has been resolved for the time being but one or two of the last genuine members to join the forum may have been lost in the mass clear out of false ones. The sad loss of Brian Marsden has left the forum without its main administrator which is why the spam attacks got as far as they did.

This has led me to consider whether it is worth continuing with the forum as there is very little traffic these days now that most people prefer the immediacy of Facebook groups. Before I make the decision as to whether to renew the domain name when it falls due in a couple of months I would like to hear from the members as to what you think should be done. To carry on will require one or two moderators to help with any day-to-day issues that might arise. Volunteers please form a queue. However, in view of the low usage will anyone actually miss the forum if it was to close?

Over to you.

I for one would be sad if the Forum closed, not everyone prefers Facebook and the like.

What is required of a moderator?

Yes, I would prefer the forum to continue if possible, I would miss it. I know it's no longer as busy as it was, but the Facebook group is just too busy for me, I unfollowed after a day.

I'm willing to give moderating a try if needed.

Moderation is really just a matter of keeping an eye on what is being posted and reacting when things get out of hand, which happens very rarely on here. The most likely actions would be the removal of spam and spammers when they get through the defences. The outrage expressed recently at the porn spam could have been avoided if we had more eyes on this and able to take action. Overall it isn't very onerous but expect criticism from certain members if you do step in when posts get out of hand. This is normal on all fora. :)

I hope it will be possible for the the forum to continue. I occasionally have a look at the New Poynton News and Gossip group but I don't have a Facebook account, so if I have something useful to say about life in Poynton, this is somewhere I can do it.

I would be sad to see this forum close, it provides a look at local issues and a chance too comment on them as they happen.
Hope we don't lose it :(

I too would be sad to see this Forum go. I do agree that there isn't as much traffic on here compared to a few years ago but not everyone wants to be on Facebook.

I check out Poynton News and Gossip occasionally but it seems to be full of missing dogs, cats and people wanting decorators.

It was very informative during the floods but is back to adverts now. I would much rather check out postings on this Forum so would love for it to continue.

I totally agree with Sam12’s opinion of the News and Gossip pages and would be sad if this forum was discontinued. It would be great if all the members who have deserted it for “new pastures” returned and contributed to make it the interesting and informative forum which it was.

I use the forum mainly for updates and opinions on local issues. One or two critical comments by Nedsram of my posts discouraged my contributions somewhat as analysis would show, but I would miss the Forum. R.
